Sandy Aftermath: Exclusive Chopper 10 Aerials

JUST A FEW MINUTES. M WE’LL HAVE A GOOD HALLOWEEN. HOW’S THAT? “CHOPPER 10” SHOWS US THE10 DAMAGE THIS MORNING. ANDY FOX JUST GOT BAG FROM NAG’S HEAD. IT’S AMAZING WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SEE.O WE’RE GOING TO “CHOPPER 10” AND WE’LL EXPLAIN EXACTLY WHAT THEX WRATH OF SANDY HAS SHOWN.Y LOOK AT THIS. LOOK ON THE LEFT SIDE. YOU DON’T SEE ANY SAND DUNES. THEY SHOULD BE THERE. THEY’RE NOT THERE BECAUSE THEY B WERE TOO WEAK AND COULDN’T HOLDD BACK THE OCEAN.D WHEN THEY WENT AWAY, THAT WAST THE LAST BARRIER TO STOP THE B OCEAN FROM COMING OVER. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED. IT FLOODED EVERYTHING IN KITTYRT HAWK AND KILL DEVIL HILLS, JUST REALLY DEVASTATED BY ALL OF A THIS. WE ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT AS WE SEE 158 THERE, 158 IS FLOODED, ALL THE LANES ARE LA FLOODED IN KITTY HAWK AND KILL DEVIL HILLS. THEY WEREL REROUTEING TRAFFIC, AND WE REPORTED THAT YESTERDAY.T THE BEACH ROAD IS DAMAGED. OUT ON PEA ISLAND FOR THE SECONF TIME IN A YEAR, HIGHWAY 12 H DESTROYED IN SOME PARTS. NOW, LOOK AT THAT. THAT’S RIGHT NEAR MERLEO BEACH.O IT GOT CUT UP IN IRENE AND NOW IS CUT UP AGAIN. THE ROADS LEADING TO IT ARE HEAVILY CHANGED. A LOT OF THAT MAY NOT BE ASPHALT GONE BUT IT’S 2, 3 FEET OF SAND. THAT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER INLET, BUT WE CAN’T TELL BECAUSE ITA MIGHT BE JUST BEN’ SAND AND THES IS NO WATER FLOWING IN THERE W LIKE WHAT WE HAD LAST YEAR IN IRENE. TOM IN AND NICOLE. EXCUSE ME. THERE’S THE AVALON PIER.O REMEMBER THAT YESTERDAY? WE BROUGHT YOU THOSE EXCLUSIVE PICTURES. IT’S CUT INUSIV HALF. AT THE END OF THE PIER, IT FELL IN, TOO. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THEY WERETHE STABILIZING THE FIRST PART AND THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO TRY TO M HAVE FISHING ON THAT FIRSTI SECTION, BUT YOU CAN SEE THEOU A STRUCTURE IS VERY COMPROMISED. SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS STORM BY THE NUMBERS, AND OUR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST DON SLATER TALKED ABOUT IT, A CATEGORY 1 STORM THAT HAS COME ASHORE, THIE LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH BIGGER IMPACT THAN ANY OTHER HURRICANE WE’VE SEEN HIT THE OUTER BANKS. DON WAS CALLING IT FROM THEI START. HE NEVER THOUGHT THERE WOULD BEB SOUND-SIDE FLOODING. THAT’S NOT THE PROBLEM. AND F THEEAIS THE OCEAN DUNES. THE ROAD IS SO CLOSE TO THE WATER. LOOK HOW CLOSE THAT IS. AS DON WILL TELL YOU FROM ALLL T THE YEARS HE’S BEEN HERE, THAT’S THE AGE-OLD PROBLEM WE HAVE. WHAT DO WE DO WITH HIGHWAY 12? DO WE ELEVATE IT? ELE WELL, COSTS A LOT OF MONEY. WHERE DO YOU MOVE IT?OVE WHERE DO YOU MOVE IT TO? THAT’S MERLO BEACH, JUST RIPPED UP IN IRENE. 5 MILES OF DUNES WASHED OUT?F YES, AND IN KITTY HAWK, AND I KITTY HAWKN IS FLOODED AND NOTHING TO HOLD IT BACK. SOME OF THE DUNES THAT GOT G WASHED OUT HAD A COUPLE OF YEARS OF GROWTH BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T HURT IN IRENE. BUT THIS WAS NO MATCH. IT JUST KEPT GOING. SO MANY FOLKS HAVE HOMES DOWH THERE.N THEY’RE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY AND THEY WANT TO KNOW TO WHETHER THEY CAN CHECK ON THEIR PLACES. WHAT DO YOU THINK?EC IT’S DIFFICULT TO DOK O THAT. UP, WE’LL INTERVIEWLL PEOPLE WHO STAYED AND THEY SAIDH THEY’LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN. WHEN I WAS ON THE AVALON FISHING PIER, I WAS STANDING THERE AND I GOT OFF OF THERE BECAUSE IT CAVED IN. WE MIGHT HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE DURATION OF THIS STORM JUST KEPT ON. LONGEST STORM I’VE EVER COVERED. I WAS THERE FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY AND MONDAY.
